OECD Global Forum calls for more investment in water and sanitation

03-Dec-2008

Water management is a challenge for both OECD and developing countries. Though the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) call for the proportion of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation to be halved by 2015, many countries are not on track to meet these goals. Amid fears that the financial crisis would result in an aid crisis, OECD donors recently made an Aid Pledge, promising to honour their aid commitments, including the water-related MDGs.

Climate Change Mitigation: WHAT DO WE DO?

27-Nov-2008

Climate change is a fact of life. We need to act urgently if we are to avoid an irreversible build-up of greenhouse gases and global warming at a potentially huge cost to the economy and society worldwide. The economics of climate change lie at the epicentre of any viable solution. This publication summarises recent OECD analyses, including on the role of technological innovation and the impacts of policies to address carbon leakage. It provides arguments to help policy-makers explain why postponing decisions, using the current economic circumstances as an excuse, is a short-sighted policy.

Does environmental policy induce technological innovation?

28-Nov-2008

Understanding the role that technological change can play in achieving environmental objectives is important since innovations can allow for improved environmental quality at lower cost. However, the relationship between environmental policy and technological innovation remains an area in which evidence remains limited. A new OECD summarises results of three case studies undertaken: abatement technologies for wastewater effluent from pulp production; abatement of motor vehicle emissions; and development of renewable energy technologies.

How much do environmental problems cost?

04-Nov-2008

There is fear that the current economic crisis might overshadow environmental concerns. A new OECD publication, Cost of Inaction on Key Environmental Challenges, shows that  not responding adequately to these challenges can be expensive.
