World Bank: The World Bank Website on Trade was created as a research, training and outreach tool for people interested in trade policy and developing countries. Particular emphasis is placed on the new trade agenda associated with the anticipated new round of WTO negotiations. Interesting course and training material can be found on the site.

WTO: The Website of the World Trade Organisation provides full coverage of the activities of the organisation and the evolution of the Doha Development Agenda.

International Trade Centre (ITC): The International Trade Centre UNCTAD/WTO (ITC) works with developing countries and economies in transition to set up effective trade promotion programmes for expanding their exports and improving their import operations. This covers six key areas: product and market development; development of trade support services; trade information; human resource development; international purchasing and supply management; and needs assessment and programme design for trade promotion.

UNCTAD: UNCTAD's technical co-operation programmes on trade aim at expanding the trading opportunities of developing countries, by building up their capacity in this area through policy advisory services, access to information and training. The emphasis is on enlargement and improvement of export market opportunities, including the commodities sector, and on improving the efficiency and cutting down the costs of export and import transactions.

Multidonor initiatives

Integrated Framework: The Integrated Framework for Trade Related Assistance to Least Developed Countries (IF) is run jointly by IMF, World Bank, ITC, UNCTAD, UNDP, and WTO. OECD participates as observer.  The IF's objectives are twofold (1) assist LDCs in mainstreaming trade priority areas of action into their national plans for economic development and Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs); (2) encourage the co-ordinated delivery of trade-related technical assistance and capacity building.

JITAP: The Joint Integrated Technical Assistance Programme is a collaborative programme launched by ITC, WTO and UNCTAD to trigger a solid process of trade policy-making in poor countries in Africa starting from a very low level of awareness and institutional capacity.

Standards and Trade Development Facility  launched in 2002 by the World Bank, the WTO, FAO and WHO, the Facility focuses on trade related technical assistance regarding food safety standards.

 

APEC: Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation. APEC's secretariat delivers WTO-related technical assistance. APEC Capacity Building for the WTO Project Directory: This is an online directory of trade related capacity building information for the Asia-Pacific Region.

UNESCAP: UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. UNESCAP Training manual on increasing capacities in trade and investment promotion African Capacity Building Foundation: ACBF aims to build and strengthen sustainable human and institutional capacity in the core public sector, in the sector's interface areas with the private sector and civil society, in training and research institutions as well as within regional organisations in order to spur economic growth, poverty reduction, good governance and effective participation by Africa in the global economy.

Development Gateway - Trade and development: The Trade and Development topic page of the Development Gateway examines key issues that were raised at the WTO Ministerial in Doha, Qatar, and encourages discussion of the recommendations and results. The page also presents information and analysis of other timely trade-related issues, with a focus on how trade activities affect the economies of developing countries. The impact of trade on poverty; and the effect of introducing labour and environmental standards are among the themes that the page explores.

ICTSD: The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development is an independent non-profit and non-governmental organisation that contributes to a better understanding of development and environment concerns in the context of international trade. A very useful weekly trade news digest provides a weekly review of trade-related articles and information relevant to the sustainable development and trade communities (free e-subscription on Website).

ECDPM: This program aims to strengthen the capacity of organisations in ACP countries to manage development policy and international co-operation and to improve co-operation between development partners in Europe and the South. The Website provides an infokit on the new Cotonou Convention (including the new trade regime) and a variety of publications on trade and capacity building.Capacity building - ECDPM: A Website dedicated to advancing the policy and practice of capacity building in international development co-operation.A special issue on trade capacity building was released in April 2002.

Trade Knowledge Network: This is part of a project aimed at building long-term capacity to address the issues of trade and sustainable development in developing country research institutions, non-governmental organisations and governments through increased awareness, knowledge and understanding of the issues. The network will link members and consolidate new and existing research on trade and sustainable development.

Trade Law Centre for Southern Africa

Aitic: AITIC's aim is to assist the less-advantaged countries (LACs) to benefit from the multilateral trading system and to participate more actively in the work of the WTO and other international trade-related organisations. The LACs include the 49 least-developed countries (LDCs), as defined by the United Nations, several low- and middle-income developing countries; and several economies in transition.

General System of Preferences: This UNCTAD website contains news and handbooks covering the different GSP schemes of developed countries towards developing countries.

Agoa: The African Growth and Opportunity Act was signed into law by President Clinton on May 18, 2000. The Act offers African countries enhanced access to US markets.

Trade Policy Reviews: The WTO Trade Policy Review Mechanism examines the trade policies and practices of the WTO Members and describes trade policymaking institutions and the macroeconomic situation.

Investment Policy Reviews: The UNCTAD Investment Policy Reviews examine individual countries' investment environments and policies
