Who's Who in PISA

The OECD Secretariat has overall managerial responsibility for the programme, monitors its implementation on a day-to-day basis, acts as the secretariat for the PISA Governing Board, builds consensus among countries and serves as the interlocutor between the PISA Governing Board and the international consortium charged with the implementation of the activities.

The PISA team

Andreas Schleicher
Head of the Indicators and Analysis Division

As Division Head, Andreas’ responsibilities include directing the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the OECD Indicators of Education Systems programme (INES) and steering the development of new projects such as the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) and the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC).

At the OECD, Andreas has also held the posts of Deputy Head of the Statistics and Indicators Division in the former Directorate for Education, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs (1997-2002) and Project Manager in the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) (1994-1996). Before joining the OECD, Andreas served as Director for Analysis at the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) within the Institute for Educational Research in the Netherlands (1993-1994) and International Co-ordinator for the IEA Reading Literacy Study, at the University of Hamburg, Germany (1989-1992). Originally a graduate in physics, he subsequently studied mathematics at Deakin University in Australia, where his master's thesis received the Bruce Choppin Award.

In 2003, Andreas was awarded the "Theodor Heuss" prize, given for "exemplary democratic engagement" in association with the public debate on PISA. He also holds an honorary professorship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. In 2002, Andreas was awarded the "educación y libertad en el ámbito educativo" prize by the Spanish national association of private schools.

A German citizen, Andreas is married, with three children. He speaks German, English, Italian and French.

John Cresswell
Analyst

John has been in Paris since 2004, after a career in Australia as a science teacher and education researcher. At the OECD, he is involved in managing and monitoring the international implementation of PISA. Before joining the Secretariat PISA team, John was the Australian National Project Manager for PISA. His initial degrees were in chemistry and education and he also has a Ph.D. from Curtin University with a special interest in school leadership and school climate. John speaks English and is studying French.

Juliet Evans
Administrative assistant

Juliet has been working for PISA since 1999. She is the first point of contact for all administrative matters and facilitates the flow of materials and information between the Secretariat and countries participating in PISA. Juliet came to Paris and to the OECD in 1996, where she initially worked for the Director of the former Directorate for Education, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs. She then worked on the OECD’s International Adult Literacy Survey and Early Childhood Education and Care project before joining PISA. Juliet is British and has a B.A. in French Studies from the University of Nottingham in the UK. Juliet speaks English, French and some German.

Miyako Ikeda
Analyst

Miyako joined the PISA team in May 2004 and is in charge of data analysis. She has a masters degree in the sociology of education from the University of Tokyo and is currently a doctoral candidate in International Educational Development at Columbia University. From 2000 to 2002, Miyako was with the World Bank in Vietnam, where she conducted a national study on the quality of primary education. From 2002 to 2004, she was with the International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO) as an Associate Expert and worked for a project of the Southern and Eastern African Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ). Miyako speaks Japanese and English and is studying French.

Kate Lancaster
Communications officer

Kate joined PISA in 2004 and is in charge of producing its publications and communications tools. Originally from the United States, she has lived in Paris since 2001. Prior to the OECD, she worked as an editor and copywriter in the private sector. Kate has degrees in literature from Brown, Oxford and Yale. She speaks English and French.

Claire Shewbridge
Analyst

Claire works on the PISA thematic report series. Using results from the PISA 2003 survey, the reports have analysed students’ general problem-solving skills, equity of access to computers at school and how students are using computers, as well as the integration of students' with an immigrant background into the school system. She has been at the OECD for 10 years. Prior to joining PISA, she worked on financial statistics in the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC), on labour force survey statistics published in the OECD Employment Outlook and on educational enrolment, graduation and financial statistics published in Education at a Glance. Claire is British and speaks English, French and basic German.

Sophie Vayssettes
Statistician

Sophie joined the PISA team in 2003 as its statistician. She has been with the OECD since 1991 and before PISA worked in the former Directorate for Education, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs and in the Directorate for Science and Technology. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in econometrics and statistics. Sophie is French and speaks French and English.

Karin Zimmer
Senior Analyst

Karin came to the OECD in September 2006, after working as a university teacher and researcher in Denmark, Austria and Germany. Her main research areas include psychological research methods, test construction and evaluation, and human cognition and perception. Karin is involved in the ongoing development of PISA, as well as in managing and monitoring the implementation of the project. Karin’s initial degree is in psychology, with a minor in education, and she has a Ph.D. in psychology and statistics from Regensburg University, Germany. Karin speaks German, Danish and English, and is currently brushing up her French.
