Mexico’s Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez (UACJ) is designing a 300-hectare University City which will consolidate its existing campuses into one.
An international advisory committee has been appointed to help develop the master plan; its members comprise international organisations and experts including certain PEB members. The plan will take into account the following principles:
-
inspirational and multi-functional architecture, symbolism and iconic elements of the region contributing to education;
-
flexibility, community use, long distance learning, efficient use of spaces;
-
design which allows for innovative learning, supports the curriculum and meets the requirements for people with special needs;
-
sustainable development;
-
integrated information and communications technology;
-
efficient cost/operation ratio;
-
safety and security issues, such as natural and manmade disasters;
-
public/private partnerships for campus maintenance and operations.
The University City is intended to bring added value to the city of Ciudad Juarez by increasing the quality of the curricula, serving to renew teacher skills, and contributing to the region’s social and economic development, thus making it a “knowledge city”.
The state government of Chihuahua awarded the 300-hectare site to the university, which currently has 20 000 students and expects to reach 40 000 in the next ten years.
