PEB Earthquake Documents in Chinese

The China Development Research Foundation is translating the PEB publication Keeping Schools Safe in Earthquakes  into Chinese and plans to print 1 000 copies to make available to the Chinese government and to the public. In addition, the Foundation is translating the OECD Recommendation Concerning Guidelines on Earthquake Safety in Schools.

PEB was part of an OECD delegation to Beijing for a conference hosted by the Ministry of Education and Beijing Normal University on “Education Decision Making and Indicators”. This was an opportunity to discuss aspects of education facilities and to exhibit for the first time the new PEB Compendium posters which were specially translated for the event.

Mexico’s UACJ Designing University City

PEB Archives in Mexico

PEB is pleased to announce that its document archives will be housed in Mexico and made available to everyone. The Architecture for Education Division at CIPAE (International Centre for Prospective and Higher Studies) in Puebla, Mexico, will care for the Programme’s historic set of books, reports, guidelines and architectural reviews related to educational infrastructure.

PreventionWeb (www.preventionweb.net) is a new information service created to increase knowledge on disaster risk reduction. The website provides a common tool for those interested or working in the area of disaster risk reduction to connect, exchange experiences and share information.

Reducing Greenhouse Gases in English HEIs

Higher education institutions (HEIs) in England will benefit from a new fund to provide repayable grants for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Projects funded under the new scheme will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, from both existing and new buildings, and enable HEIs to save money in the long term and to benefit from carbon trading. Projects might include better energy management, on-site renewable energy generation, waste management, and sustainable construction and refurbishment.

OECD’s 2008 Education at a Glance to be published on Tuesday 9 September

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría will launch the 2008 edition of OECD’s annual Education at a Glance at a news conference at 11.00 a.m. on 9 September 2008 in Paris. This rich compendium of comparable statistics provides valuable underpinning for policy debate and decisions by education authorities.

Conference on Environments for Learners with Special Needs

PEB, in co-operation with the New Zealand Ministry of Education, held an international conference entitled “Inclusion and Integration through Innovation: The Role of 21st Century Learning Environments in Promoting Social Participation and Access to Education for Learners with Special Needs” in Auckland, New Zealand. OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education- First Meeting of Group of National Experts

The launch of the OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education took place from 21-22 January 2008 in OECD Headquarters, Paris. The meeting was opened by Deputy Secretary-General Aart de Geus (read his speech) and Director of the OECD Directorate for Education, Dr. Barbara Ischinger.

The conference will discuss the evaluation of the OECD activity on “Education Development for Students at Risk & those with Disabilities in South Eastern Europe” with national & international stakeholders to develop concrete perspectives for future support; provide information about relevant international & European developments with regard to education for special needs students & raise awareness for support of inclusive practices amongst policy makers at all levels; provide a platform for discussion between education Ministries, the donor community, IOs and NGOs.

Global Forum on Education - The Challenges for Education in a Global Economy

The first Forum on the theme of The Challenges for Education in a Global Economy, co-hosted with the Chilean Ministry of Education, was held in Santiago on 24-25 October 2005. This event drew on the networks of education officials and experts established since 1991 through the Directorate for Education’s Programme for Co-operation with non OECD Economies.
