Tourism, an important economic activity, is an area of public policy in most OECD countries. The Tourism Committee acts as a forum of exchange for monitoring policies and structural changes affecting the development of international tourism and promotes a sustainable economic growth of tourism. The mandate of the Tourism Committee highlights the main missions of the OECD in the field of tourism.

The International Forum on Tourism Statistics provides, since 1993, a unique platform for the regular exchange of views and experiences on developments in tourism statistics. The aim is to discuss major technical issues concerning the establishment of harmonised tourism statistics.
The 9th Forum will focus on the following themes: i) changes in tourism behaviour and demand; ii) the behaviour and performance of tourism enterprises; iii) measurement issues related to tourist and visitor surveys; iv) new approaches to data collection; and v) the usage of tourism statistics.

Governments need to put in place comprehensive strategies to make their tourism industries more competitive and work with industry and regional and local authorities to promote sustainable tourism development. This was the message from a High-level OECD Committee meeting on Tourism in Italy on 9-10 October 2008 involving ministers and industry experts from 27 OECD countries and 12 non-member countries.

Globalisation is strengthening global competition through new destinations and new consumers/tourists, and driving structural change in the tourism industry. Policy makers, industry leaders and tourism experts came together to discuss how the tourism economy must improve its competitiveness, and how tourism actors must use their resources more efficiently & more innovatively to develop and bring to the market products that are competitive in the world market.
