School buildings were the most heavily affected structure during the great Wenchuan earthquake, and student and teacher populations suffered heavy losses of life. In the wake of the earthquake, the OECD, and PEB in particular, offered to help China improve earthquake safety in schools.

Spaces and places for innovation and knowledge transfer, and spaces for interaction were the themes of a PEB presentation to the General Conference of the OECD Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education, and to the launch workshop for the second phase of the Reviews of Higher Education in Regional Development.
